QUESTION & ANSWER
Q: Do I need any special permission to install this equipment?
A: You will need to have permission from the owner of the building.
Satellite dishes smaller than 1m in diameter normally do not require local government
approval.
Q: Can it be installed in an apartment or flat
A: Yes, in most cases, the equipment can be installed in apartments or
flats. However, you should gain permission from the body corporate in the first
instance. The installer will explain the best installation arrangement and
any cost variation before any work is done.
A dish may be installed on the roof,
or with a balcony with a northerly aspect it may be possible to put the
dish in a concrete filled flowerpot on the balcony, as shown in the photo.
Q: Can I install the equipment myself?
A: The required equipment can be purchased from various satellite
suppliers, but please check the equipment specifications with TVO first. It is important that you obtain a satellite receiver
suitable for the
Irdeto 2 encryption system that is used by this channel.
You are free to use any other equipment supplier or installer, as you may
wish, but we strongly recommend an experienced satellite installer is used
to ensure trouble-free reception in the longer term.
The NHKWPA signal is encrypted. You will need to have a smart card and a
suitable satellite receiver to
decode the signal. The smart card is supplied by TVO to subscribers.
Q: Can I sell the equipment when I no longer need it?
A: You may be able to sell it second-hand, depending on its age and
condition. However, it is only of use for certain satellite services. A
potential new subscriber to the NHKWPA service may be interested.
Of course, make sure you have cancelled your subscription before selling
or giving away the equipment and return the smart card to TVO.
Q: Can I record the programs?
A: Normal television copyright applies to the NHK programs.
Q: Are the programs in the Japanese NTSC or Australian PAL format?
A: The programs are transmitted in PAL.
Q: How can I watch the programs on several TV sets in my home?
A: Standard installation is for connection to one TV set. It is possible
to connect to more TV sets. You can distribute the signal from the
satellite receiver through the antenna cable in your home, please ask the
satellite installer or a TV technician. Please note that the standard
subscription fee is for one TV set. For additional TV sets connected an
extra fee is payable - please see the Subscriber Agreement for details.
Q: Can I buy a second satellite receiver?
A: Yes. However, to decode the signal you would then also need a second
smart card. An additional smart card requires an additional full
subscription.
Q: Can I use an existing satellite dish?
A: It depends if the satellite dish is looking at the same satellite.
Dishes used for Foxtel or Austar are pointed at a different satellite and
therefore can not be used for the NHK service at the same time. A dish
used for SelectTV is pointing at the same satellite (IS-8, which used to
be called PAS-8), and therefore can be used to also receive NHK WPA.
Q: How long will it take to install the equipment?
A: An average installation should take between 2 E3 hours depending upon the
size and type of your house. When the installation is complete you need to contact TVO for your
smart card to be activated to receive the NHKWPA service.
